Michelle Trachtenberg Passes Away at 39 Due to Organ Rejection After Liver Transplant
Michelle Trachtenberg, known for her roles in Gossip Girl and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has passed away at the age of 39. Her body was discovered by her mother at around 8 a.m. on February 26 in her apartment on Central Park South, Manhattan, New York. The New York Police Department confirmed that she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her representative, Gary Mantoosh, expressed deep sorrow: “We are heartbroken to confirm that Michelle Trachtenberg has passed away. Her family asks for privacy during this difficult time.”
Last year, Michelle underwent a liver transplant, but her body showed signs of organ rejection. In recent public appearances, she appeared pale, raising concerns among fans about her health.
A Star from an Early Age
Michelle Trachtenberg was born on October 11, 1985, in New York to a Jewish immigrant family—her father from Germany and her mother from Russia. She began her acting career at the age of three, appearing in numerous television commercials. In 1996, she landed her first major role as the lead in Harriet the Spy, which marked a turning point in her career.

From 2000 to 2003, Michelle played Dawn Summers, the younger sister of Buffy Summers, in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This role helped solidify her talent and gained her widespread recognition. She later starred as Georgina Sparks in Gossip Girl from 2007 to 2012, portraying a manipulative and troublemaking character.
A Career Beyond Television
Beyond television, Michelle also starred in several films, including EuroTrip (2004), Ice Princess (2005), and 17 Again (2009). She also made guest appearances in popular series like Law & Order, Six Feet Under, and Weeds.
Speaking Out Against Industry Misconduct
In 2021, Michelle publicly supported her Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Charisma Carpenter, who accused show creator Joss Whedon of inappropriate behavior on set. Michelle revealed that, as a teenager, she had also experienced uncomfortable situations with Whedon and that there was even a rule preventing him from being alone with her.

A Tragic Loss
Michelle Trachtenberg’s sudden passing has left a deep sense of loss among fans and colleagues. She will be remembered not only for her acting talent but also for her courage in speaking out to protect herself and others in the entertainment industry.
